INTRODUCTION
The Gender and Human Rights Program area of Nkumu Fed-Fed was established to address the pervasive issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and human rights violations faced by women and girls in our communities.
BACKGROUND
At Nkumu Fed-Fed's founding, women and girls faced significant violence rooted in societal norms and harmful practices, including:
- Domestic Violence: Physical, emotional, and psychological abuse without support systems.
- Denial of Resources: Inequitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
- Harmful Traditional Practices: Early marriage, female genital mutilation, and discrimination.
- Trafficking and Smuggling: Increased vulnerability of women and girls to exploitation.
OBJECTIVES
To combat these challenges, our program focuses on:
- Advocacy and Awareness: Raising awareness about GBV and fostering respect and equality.
- Support Services: Providing counselling, legal assistance, and safe spaces for survivors.
- Capacity Building: Empowering women and girls through education and skill development.
- Community Engagement: Promoting dialogue about harmful practices with community leaders.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS OF NKUMU FED-FED
- 15 Branches: Established at national and international levels.
- Support for Survivors: Funded support for nearly 4000 GBV survivors.
- Task Force Membership: Active members of the Human Trafficking Task Force of the NWR.
- Rehabilitation Unit: Constructed a unit at NFF headquarters for the withdrawal and rehabilitation of trafficking victims.
